Ready, Set, Paint

Putting together a stretched canvas requires quite a few steps. Prep and assembly.  Except for the small paintings that I work on, all my canvas are made by my handy husband, Tom.  I give him a list of sizes I want and he knocks them out.  Being able to make our own stretched canvas allows me to offer unusual sizes  as well as custom sizes for my client’s  needs.

I took a series of photos a couple of years ago to show the step by step process.  It starts with 10′  lengths of shaped stretcher bars that we buy. Then they are cut to the right size, mitered, and a slot added for a thumbnail fastener.  The canvas I use is 12 oz  and  double primed.  The canvas is cut to size leaving 4″ all around to wrap to the back side of the stretcher frame. One side is stapled then it goes to the stretcher machine for the other three sides to be stretched and stapled.  Here we go…

Tom is a very handy guy! Takes some talent to do that job, for sure. I inspected the ones I got from you, and he did an excellent job!
