Using Stencils in Artwork

Layers, layers, and more layers, that’s what my paintings are all about.  Seeing how one covers the next and then revealing what’s underneath is fascinating.  I have recently been adding the use of stencils to the mix.  The  result is more nuance, depth, and interest.  Using the positive or negative of the stencil and then  adding paint to blur or soften the image gives it a nice richness. Or leave it as is.

I posted a YouTube video a couple of weeks ago that uses this process.  The finished painting is shown above and below are some detail photos of “Fanciful” and the video.  Give them a try!

I love almost all of your work – very inspiring. Where do you get your stencils – I have searched the web without much success.

Thanks for visiting my blog and for your comment. When I searched online I looked for art stencils. I did find http://www.stencilgirlproducts.com and think they have some very nice ones.

Wow I am new to Acrylics, and loved your video! Are you using all opaque paints? Do you set out your colors ahead of time and do you use/add any gessos or mediums to your paints before you apply to the canvas? If so please share!

Thanks for your response. Also do you like to see others work based on your tutorials?

Sure, if you would like to email me some pictures that would be fine. I hope you are enjoying the process and are moving toward developing your own style.

I have pretty much always used acrylics and use a variety of viscosity as well as opaque and transparent. Unlike many painters, I layout about 30 colors, sometimes I use them and sometimes not but I don’t clean my palette after each painting so they are there when I want them. I generally paint wet into wet and don’t often use mediums.
