How To Add Gold Leaf To A Painting

Add a little sparkle to your painting using gold leaf.  I love the way it catches the light as you walk by it.  It’s easy to do.  The traditional way is to use red under the leafing but in this demostration I used it on the entire canvas because I wanted the warm color to come through.  You don’t have to use red, use any color, or none at all.  Below are some photos of the steps.  The video shows the whole process in real time and then the progress of the painting.

If you want it in a certain spot, mark it out, and tape.  Then apply a gold leaf sizing, let dry until it’s tacky.  There are several ways to apply the leafing but I just pick it up and set it down.  Use a brush to tap it down.  Keep brushing until the sizing is covered and the bits of leaf are off the canvas.
